MIAMI — Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been denied entry into the United States, preventing him from participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ending what would have been a historic milestone for Somali football.
Artan, who was selected by FIFA as one of the tournament officials, arrived at Miami International Airport from Istanbul over the weekend. Despite reportedly holding a valid U.S. visa, American authorities denied him entry following additional immigration screening. U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that the traveler was found inadmissible after a vetting process, though officials did not publicly disclose specific details.
FIFA confirmed that Artan would not be able to train or officiate at the World Cup, which begins this week across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The organization noted that immigration decisions are the responsibility of host-country authorities.
Artan was set to become the first Somali referee ever to officiate at a FIFA World Cup match. Widely respected across Africa, he has officiated major continental tournaments and earned recognition as one of the continent’s top match officials.
The decision has sparked disappointment among Somali football supporters and sports officials, many of whom viewed Artan’s World Cup appointment as a significant achievement for Somali football on the global stage.
In a statement, Artan thanked FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, and supporters for their encouragement. He said he remains committed to refereeing and wished his fellow officials success during the tournament.
The incident has also renewed discussion about immigration and travel restrictions affecting citizens of certain countries, including Somalia. U.S. authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact reason for denying Artan entry.
